This afternoon I was having a conversation about being being good doesn’t means you always have to be nice. Saying yes while you mean no, having somebody else take credit for your hard work just because you don’t think it’s worth the fight or letting one of your photo’s get printed by The Hindustan Times - without any notification, without any credits, without any payment, without any word of thanks… without any shame.
It’s not being good it’s just being bad to yourself.
Nita, who you might know from A wide angle view of India and a subscriber of the Hindustan Times got today what she definitely didn’t pay for; a picture taken by herself and published by herself on her own blog got published in the Hindustan times (a major newspaper in India that in contrary to Nita earns money – $9000 for the quarter - with it’s articles) without any form of permission!
She spoke up – The full story you can read here: A major Indian newspaper steals a blogger’s photograph!!
How you can support? Get the word out there – if you haven’t been at it for a while just blow that dust from your keyboard and have your say. Be good to yourself!
Thanks Purnima. It’s a shame isn’t it. I was very disturbed by this incident, being a journalist myself. This sort of thing must be commmon in India as our laws are weak. We keep saying that bollywood copies, but if bollywood copies it doesn’t mean something is wrong with bollywood only…bollywood is made of people and these people are in all professions. Its easy to find out these things done by bollywood as the movies they steal from are usually hits. But if a newspaper or magazine steals from an unknown blogger from another town they can get away with it! In my case it was sheer chance that I subscribe to the HT. I like the paper but this incident has left me disillusioned.
BTW I wrote this in response to one incident quite some time ago and got much feedback from all around the world http://thecookscottage.typepad.com/curry/2006/03/flattery_or_pla.html
well who knows how many more papers are into this thing? time to get awareness up…btw would you like to join YOUTH UNITE ?
Yes, plagiarism is quite a problem, more so in India as Nita points out, lax laws!
Much ado about nothing.
Why are you guys after the job of some poor/lousy/lazy designer sitting in some cramped corner of a shabby design room at HT?
Ab maaf bhi karo bhai, it must have just happened.
where are u?!!!
So when you are back now, why are you hiding from us?

Uncle?????????????????????????????????????????????????????..have you gone crazy senorita?…I wont be called uncle by any young girl till next 20 years…lol
Btw, I have no idea what Baryaal is saying..:)
I mean I understand the words and their meanings, but I cant figure out how it relates with this post or my comment..
ok, here it is roughly translated:
“Those who have lost their way
When they return
You don’t have to ask about the journey
Let their faces tell, everything.”
Now, it relates to the whole blog.
Purnima started it as a celebrtion of her journey to India,
We haven’t seen much about her stay in India,
Instead, she only treated us to La Chutiya’s.
And, now she is gine,
What a waste of our time

Baryaal Dude,
Really Do have a glass of Pom Grenade Juice! I don’t know wheter it’s your last line that irked me or just your totall reaction but christ (buddha or those other dudes for that matter) ever single time I hear a man say what a waste of my time I just get so furious.
You know it’s like having a wonderful date with a man and afterwards, after you just refused going to bed with him, he turns in the next best jerk and says ooohw what a waste of our time and leaves in a hurry.
I’m a girl okay. Every bloody single time I interact with someone is important to me. If you read the about this blog page carefully
http://makeidlinotwar.wordpress.com/about-this-blog/
you would’ve known it didn’t start out as a blog about India. It was my first flirt with blogging and I had no idea what direction I would be going. If you read the chutiya part better you would have known that I shifted to another blog to write about my india experiences.
I didn’t mean to waste your time. Í’m sorry I gave you expectations I couldn’t live up to and really really thank you for your nice words and being such a totall guy!
Sweetie,
Didn’t mean to hurt anyone,
And, had you kept your original sense of humour in the face of the hot and humid Indian weather, power outages, flies, scooty falls and all that, you wouldn’t have turned into a Lecturer by the end of your trip
BTW, I know truth irks
